August 18, 2023 - August 11, 2024

Port Allen - The West Baton Rouge Museum celebrates the opening of its newest exhibition Angela Gregory: Portraits & Process on Friday, August 18, 2023, from 6-8 PM at its Historical Happy Hour.

On view through August 11, 2024, Angela Gregory: Portraits & Process is the second in a series titled Angela Gregory: Doyenne of Louisiana Sculpture. Guest curated by Elizabeth Chubbuck Weinstein, the project marks the most comprehensive look at the artist's art and life to date. Angela Gregory (1903-1990) is best known for her many architectural commissions made for important buildings such as the Louisiana State Capital, and for her three monuments, one of them in Port Allen. Yet, she also held an abiding interest in portraiture. Over the course of her career, she sculpted over one-hundred likenesses of people and was among the earliest twentieth-century artists to portray African Americans with dignity. On view are plaster maquettes, models, molds, and finished bronzes as well as drawings selected from private collections and area museums, including the West Baton Rouge Historical Association. Rarely shown to the public, together these artworks demonstrate Angela Gregory's sensitive handling of portraiture, technical skill, and art-making process.

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 AM to 4:30 PM and Sunday 2 PM to 5 PM. For more information call 225-336-2422
